Geriatrics
Geriatric-centered medical care is focused around helping individuals who are 65 and older cope with the challenges associated with aging, and evolving changes to their healthcare needs.
What is a Geriatrician?
Geriatricians are primary care providers who focus their medical practice on the older adult population. They provide the medical evaluation and treatment of conditions that commonly occur later in life, such as, but not limited to diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, osteoporosis, and urinary incontinence. Geriatricians will also focus on a patient’s cognitive state and can provide treatment, referrals and recommendations for those who are experiencing memory loss, confusion and dementia.
Geriatricians are comfortable to treat older adults who experience comorbidity and can help patients manage multiple medications.
As healthcare needs change as we age, feelings of uncertainty, stress and anxiety may arise – for both the patient, their loved ones and their caregivers. Geriatricians can provide social evaluation and counseling for those having a difficult time adjusting to the idea of aging, feeling stressed or anxious, and can help resolve daily living challenges and management of dementing illness. Geriatricians also provide support to the patient’s family and/or caregivers.
When should you visit a Geriatrician?
If you an older adult and suffer from chronic, complex medical conditions, are concerned with overall function and quality of life as you continue to age, take multiple medications or are experiencing any memory loss, you should consider scheduling a consultation with a Geriatric Specialist.
