Dual Diagnosis Unit

ECHN now has a new Dual Diagnosis Unit at Manchester Memorial Hospital. This 22-bed unit is for individuals 18 years old and up and is for adults diagnosed with substance use disorder and an underlying mental health disorder.

The Dual Diagnosis unit as ECHN is intended to help persons who are struggling and diagnosed with behavioral health disorders and substance use disorders, at the same time. Nearly 6 in 10 individuals who struggle with substance use disorder are also affected by at least one co-occurring mental disorder.

People suffering with this dual diagnosis struggle in obtaining care for both of their disorders. With a dual diagnosis, it is important to factor in one’s mental health and addiction into account when going through the recovery process. Acknowledging all conditions is a critical component of treatment. It is beneficial to look at all disorders as whole and treat them concurrently to ensure greater recovery. The dual diagnosis unit can provide individualize treatment plans for its patients and consider what mental health issues one is struggling with, as well as the substance use disorders.

ECHN’s dual diagnosis unit will help patients stabilize and connect with recovery supports in the communities where they live. Recovery looks different for different people, and this dual diagnosis unit offers hope, support, and connections to help patients engage in recovery. There is medication assisted treatment for various conditions and evidence-based treatment from a multidisciplinary treatment team.
